I've been thinking a lot about virtue lately. I lived my entire life under very strict, asian parents who made me live and breathe the asian values of discipline, achievement and ambition. I know that not all asians are like that. Many just strive to be hard working and good people. But sometimes, when you see that asian parent beating their kid because they misbehaved, or when you see that asian kid excelling in every academic subject at school, you've got to understand that it's how most asians have been brought up, and the back story of harsh punishment and abuse that they endured to get to where they are.
From my own experiences, I have been thinking lately that maybe the goal of life is not achievement, but to live as good, moral human beings. It is so important to be a nice person.
This is what I want to do as a career when I graduate. I want to be a social worker for asian families, mainly helping them settle into New Zealand but also solving any abuse problems that may occur. I personally think that asians have the biggest problems in society. It is because they are human like everyone else with human flaws but are the only ones who never admit to them. It is part of the culture, and they don't want to lose face.
It is sometimes not how much money, or fame, or friends you have... what is more important is the way you treat people, and the way you treat yourself. Before you hurt someone, think: is it worth it? What is it for? How will that person continue life thereafter?
In my opinion, in the majority modern Asian culture, people only strive for money and tangible achievements. They place nowhere near enough emphasis on being kind to people and treating people well. It's these intangible, intrinsic achievements, like happiness, freedom and love that matter in life.
Well, I learnt the hard way. I read a quote once, that said: There are 3 rules in life. 1. To be kind, 2. To be kind, and 3. To be kind. To be a good, moral, kind human being is so much more important than being one of achievement. I really do hope that the world will become a better place one day.
